Though very little research has been done on the Amazonian wonder berry, its benefits are widely raved about from personalities to medical experts. The first of its research conducted by the Texas AgriLife Research scientists have found out that the acai (ah-sigh-EE) berry has the ability to be absorbed in the human body when consumed both as juice and pulp. This finding was recently published in an issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The research states that the Brazilian acai berry absorbed much better than any other fruit or food because of its high content of antioxidants. Because of this one super benefit, the berry is heavily marketed in the U.S. as a health food and has even entered the Dr. Perricone’s list of super foods. The research conducted involved 12 healthy volunteers who consumed a single serving of acai juice or pulp.

Principal investigator Dr. Susanne Talcott said "Acai is naturally low in sugar, and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate, so what more would you want from a fruit?" Talcott, who also is assistant professor with the Texas A&M University’s nutrition and food science department, said that previous studies have shown the ability of the human body to absorb target antioxidants (from other produce), but "no one had really tested to see if acai antioxidants are absorbed in humans."

Since being touted as a metabolism booster, weight reducer and athletic enhancer, sales of acai products have dramatically increased in the U.S. These berries are considered exotic- being harvested in the Brazilian rainforest from acai palms that may reach heights in excess of 60 feet - one of the same palms used to harvest edible hearts of palm. Talcott noted that the size of the fruit is similar to a large blueberry with only the outermost layers of the fruit and the pulp surrounding the seed are edible.

Talcott and her co-researcher and husband Dr. Steve Talcott began studying the palm- berry in 2001. His first scientific report on acai, apparently the first such study in English, was published in 2004. Initial research done on the acai was done to examine the antioxidant and nutritional values of the pulp and juice, with later studies focused on the benefits of the berry in fighting cancer. Since the benefits of fighting cancer was found, the researchers then decided to find out whether those elements were actually being absorbed into the human body or being eliminated unused as waste. Says Steve Talcott, "Like vitamin C, the body can only absorb so much at a time!

For centuries, acai (ah-sigh-ee) berries have been consumed by Brazilian tribes because of their health benefits and great flavor. Acai berries look like dark purple grapes, only slightly smaller, but they cannot be eaten like grapes. Ninety percent of the acai berry is its pit; during processing, the seed and pulp are separated. Acai puree is used in juice, yogurts and desserts; however, it can also be eaten alone and tastes like a chocolate berry.

In the 1990s, acai berries were introduced to the U.S. as the hottest export from Brazil after the string bikini and the matching wax job, and more recently, everyone has been jumping on the acai berry bandwagon in the hopes of improving their overall health. So, how healthy are acai berries? We’ve done the research for you: here’s a breakdown of the all-important compounds these tiny super-berries contain.

Antioxidants
Red and purple fruits and veggies are known to be high in antioxidants. The same holds true for acai berries, which are high in anthocyanins, an antioxidant that gives them their deep purple color. Anthocyanins help combat premature aging and also have cardiovascular benefits. They help prevent blood clots and improve circulation. What’s also great about the acai berry is the amount of antioxidants it possesses. Acai berries contain 10 times the antioxidants of grapes and twice the amount found in blueberries. Red wine is still great to sip with your lean cut of red meat, but acai berries have 10-30 times more anthocyanins than a glass of red wine. Vitamin E, also known for its antioxidant properties, is found in acai berries.

Phytosterols
Phytosterols, also known as plant sterols, are similar in structure and function to cholesterol in the body. They lower cholesterol absorption and, as a result, may help lower total cholesterol levels in the body. Some clinical trials have also shown that phytosterols can improve symptoms of an enlarged prostate and urinary tract health.

Want to give acai berries a taste? Get all the facts first..!

Fatty Acids
Healthy fats omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-9 (oleic acid) are found in acai berries in ratios similar to those found in olive oil. You wouldn’t want to guzzle olive oil, but acai berries taste great. Fatty acids are good for a healthy nervous system. They are also utilized in repairing muscles after intense exercise. The fatty acids keep you in good health so you can continue to work out. Omega-6 and omega-9 lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and maintain HDL (good cholesterol), and improve the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Fiber
Fiber, which is found in the skin of many fruits, aids in digestion. It collects all the gunk in the intestinal tract and makes it easier to pass. That’s also believed to be the reason fiber can help lower cholesterol and lowers the risk of heart disease. Fiber also helps prevent those spikes in blood sugar and the afternoon slump. Fiber slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, therefore controlling blood-sugar levels.

health boost
Acai berries are very perishable, so the pulp is primarily found freeze-dried in gourmet or health food stores. The pulp can be used in many ways in snacks or desserts, and is usually combined with pineapple, banana and pomegranate flavors. Acai berries can also be paired with guarana to achieve an energy boost similar to caffeine.

Due to the high fiber content of acai berries, it is recommended that you add them slowly to your diet. Adding too much fiber too soon doesn’t give your intestinal tract time to adjust and can lead to bloating, gas, cramps or constipation. Also, note that anyone with a pollen allergy may not want to eat acai berries. In more serious cases, acai berries may interfere with chemotherapy drugs.

In the first research involving people, the acai (ah-sigh-EE) berry has proven its ability to be absorbed in the human body when consumed both as juice and pulp. That finding, by a team of Texas AgriLife Research scientists, was published in a recent issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Showing the berry’s absorption in humans is important because it is known to contain numerous antioxidants. The berry is heavily marketed in the U.S. as a health food.

The study involved 12 healthy volunteers who consumed a single serving of acai juice or pulp. Researchers believe the results point to the need for continued research on the berry which is commonly used in juices, beverages, smoothies, frozen treats and dietary supplements.

"Acai is naturally low in sugar, and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate,” said lead investigator Dr. Susanne Talcott, “so what more would you want from a fruit?”

Talcott, who also is assistant professor with the Texas A&M University’s nutrition and food science department, said that previous studies have shown the ability of the human body to absorb target antioxidants (from other produce), but “no one had really tested to see if acai antioxidants are absorbed in humans."

Sales of acai products have increased dramatically in the U.S. where it has been touted as a metabolism booster, weight reducer and athletic enhancer. Advertisements use buzzwords such as health, wellness, energy, taste and organic.

About the only buzzword not used with acai is "local." The berries are harvested in the Brazilian rainforest from acai palms that may reach heights in excess of 60 feet - one of the same palms used to harvest edible hearts of palm.

The fruit is about the size of a large blueberry yet only the outermost layers of the fruit, the pulp surrounding a large internal seed, are edible, Talcott noted.

"Like vitamin C, the body can only absorb so much at a time," Steve Talcott explained.

He said the researchers now “need to determine potential disease-fighting health benefits, so we can make intelligent recommendations on how much acai should be consumed.

For the clinical trial, people were given acai pulp and acai juice containing half the concentration of anthocyanins as the pulp and each compared to the control foods: applesauce and a non-antioxidant beverage.

Blood and urine samples at 12 and 24 hours after consumption showed significant increases in antioxidant activity in the blood after both the acai pulp and applesauce consumption, she said. Both acai pulp and acai juice showed significant absorption of antioxidant anthocyanins into the blood and antioxidant effects. The research couple said future studies hopefully will help determine whether the consumption of acai will result in any disease-preventing health benefit and the proper serving sizes for a beneficial dose for people.

"Our concern has been that it is sold as a super food – and it definitely has some good attributes – but it is not a solution to all diseases,” she said. “There are a great number of foods on the market, and this could just be part of a well-balanced diet."

Brazil Botanicals has announced that the company is launching a new line of exotic acai to meet rapidly changing needs of today’s health conscious consumers.

There is a big difference between sugar-laden, reconstituted fruit juices that are currently on the market and the authentic Brazil Botanicals’ Super Food that contain 85% of the respective fruit and nothing artificial nor do they contain added water.

Customers believe that just any juice they buy will actually prove to be beneficial to them. Unfortunately, it’s not always true. Most exotic juices come from foreign lands, but since the pure juice is expensive to harvest, pre-process and ship, many juice suppliers cut corners in order to save money. Some companies subsequently add water, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives and even use reconstituted powders along with other inexpensive juices or fillers, thus diluting and adulterating their "pure juice" product. Some also do this to alter the taste of their juices as the "native" taste may not be to their liking.

Brazil Botanicals offers their customers exotic juices that deliver a high concentration of the pure Super Juices and adds just enough pure natural juices to improve the taste without diminishing the potency of the juice.

"Our customers are knowledgeable about the importance of consuming 5 servings of fruit everyday. Our exotic juices make that task very easy, fast, inexpensive and tasty all at the same time," commented Dr. Tim founder and CEO of Brazil Botanicals.

As an important part of Dr. Tim’s studies includes visits to Thailand, China, Brazil, Hawaii, Samoa and Tonga where he meets directly with farmers and fruit suppliers to get the best quality fruit available at the lowest costs. He imports the fruit to St. George, Utah where he processes the fruit in a USDA and Kosher certified facility using his own Cryoflux technology to preserve the active enzymes, potency and taste of the fruits. Dr. Tim’s background in medical research, nutritional supplementation and formulation has positioned him to be an expert in this field.

Dr. Tim has been able to keep his costs low since he controls his product from the farms to finished product. He enjoys traveling and meeting with the local farmers, processors and suppliers in each country he visits. His personal goal is to help sustain the generations-old farming lifestyles the local people use.

The Brazilian, Asian and Polynesian rainforests are particularly vulnerable to uncontrolled forest clearing for cattle ranching as well as harvesting of valuable hard woods. Many who are clearing such rain forest areas ignore the devastating effect they are having on the environment by destroying indigenous plants. Dr. Tim is doing all he can to help the farmers preserve the harvest areas as pristine sources of beneficial organic and natural plants.

Dr. Tim has a unique way of dealing with his customers. He makes certain that they are very happy with his products and services and immediately takes steps to assure that excellent customer service is provided at all times. He constantly asks his customers for ideas to keep his prices as low as possible. He speaks with customers daily and resolves problems immediately.

Here are some recent testimonials that Acai Berries has received:

"I love the acai juice! I have a problem sleeping and the acai juice makes me rest all night and I feel so revived in the morning. - Dee P.

"Dr. Tim"s Exotic Juices passed my 3 month trial test, my blood sugar dropped over 20 points! I will keep buying!" - G.D., New Jersey

"I’ve been interested in your juices since I first saw them online last winter. I just know that these juices can have phenomenal health benefits and no other company I’ve researched has anywhere near the quality you have and at an incredible price!" - J. Collins

"I want you to know I was delighted to receive my order in fewer than 48 hours after I placed it with you. Before I even opened the product, I was impressed.

Washington, October 7 (ANI): A Brazilian palm berry called “acai” (pronounced ah-sigh-EE), known to contain numerous antioxidants, has proven its ability to be absorbed in the human body when consumed both as juice and pulp, say researchers.
Texas AgriLife Research scientists say that though the berry is heavily marketed in the U.S. as a health food, little research has been done on it.
The researchers say that their findings point to the need for continued research on the berry which is commonly used in juices, beverages, smoothies, frozen treats and dietary supplements.
“Acai is naturally low in sugar, and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate, so what more would you want from a fruit?” said lead investigator Dr. Susanne Talcott.
Talcott, who also is assistant professor with the Texas A and M University’s nutrition and food science department, insists that this is for the first time that a team of researchers has “really tested to see if acai antioxidants are absorbed in humans.”
Her husband Dr. Steve Talcott said that the researchers “(now) need to determine potential disease-fighting health benefits, so we can make intelligent recommendations on how much acai should be consumed.”
During the study, healthy volunteers were given acai pulp and acai juice containing half the concentration of anthocyanins as the pulp, and each compared to the control foods: applesauce and a non-antioxidant beverage.
Susanne said that blood and urine samples at 12 and 24 hours after consumption showed significant increases in antioxidant activity in the blood after both the acai pulp and applesauce consumption.
Both acai pulp and acai juice showed significant absorption of antioxidant anthocyanins into the blood and antioxidant effects, she added.
The research couple hope that their future studies would help determine whether the consumption of acai could result in any disease-preventing health benefit, and the proper serving sizes for a beneficial dose for people.
“Our concern has been that it is sold as a super food - and it definitely has some good attributes - but it is not a solution to all diseases. There are a great number of foods on the market, and this could just be part of a well-balanced diet,” she said.

This is a short video clip of the Acai berry juice in fox news. The bottles are bottles of Monavie. The top of the line acai juice blend, it has 18 other fruits combined with the pure acai extract.

The acai berry has become amazingly popular thanks to TV shows like Oprah and Rachel Ray. Many people are asking themselves now if Acai Berries are actually really worth what they have been praised.

The Acai Berry comes from the Acai Palm which is mainly found in the Brazilian rain forests. It tastes like a blend of Blueberries and Chocolate. Most Americans love the taste of Acai!
